I remember the pressure of high school—grades, extracurricular activities, and the looming specter of college applications. It felt like a relentless treadmill, with little room for genuine connection or self-reflection. Anxiety and stress were constant companions, not just for me but for many of my peers. It wasn’t until I encountered teachers who prioritized compassion that I began to understand the difference it could make.

This compassionate approach made a significant difference in how I perceived my school environment. It turned a place that often felt competitive and stressful into a supportive community where I felt valued. The mental health benefits were immediate. I found myself more engaged in class, more willing to participate, and less anxious about making mistakes. The stress that used to keep me up at night began to wane, replaced by a sense of security and belonging.

Jazairei (2018) states that Students already carry the seeds of compassion within them. Teachers have the chance to support each student’s development of compassion at different phases of their educational journey. We can learn more about whether, when, how, and for whom compassion and compassion trainings—using age-appropriate, culturally sensitive, and scientifically rigorous techniques—influence individual students, classrooms, and ultimately, societies—with rigorous designs and longitudinal follow-up. (Jazairei, 2018).

“Mental health should permeate all aspects of school life and learning. Effective schools therefore put systems in help to promote mental health and well being and thus being resilience in both staff and students to help prepare them to cope with a range of life events. (Mason et. al., 2021, p,8).”

The impact of compassionate education on mental health and well-being cannot be overstated. By fostering a supportive and empathetic learning environment, educators can significantly enhance the emotional and psychological well-being of their students. As the mental health crisis in education continues to grow, adopting compassionate education practices is not just beneficial but essential.

While I was studying at university again at the age of 36, whenever I felt the harsh attitude of the teacher, I felt that my learning slowed down and I had difficulty accepting the information. This stress is too much for children and adolescents.

However, the important aspect is that the methods employed are research-based, age-appropriate, culturally sensitive, and scientifically rigorous. The emphasis is on teacher training. Mental health is being more addressed in today’s schools, but it is most important that the teachers be very well educators on promoting SEL skills in the classroom.
